Construction Cost: $4.72M

Completion Date: 2/24/25

Located in a fast-growing region of Iowa, the City of Elkhart needed a new water treatment facility to ensure it could provide for the water needs of its residents and businesses for decades to come.

The community partnered with Wendler and Veenstra & Kimm to develop and construct a state-of-the-art treatment plant designed to enhance filtration, increase capacity, and meet all federal and state water quality standards.

With a production capacity of nearly half a million gallons per day, the new plant provides the city with a sustainable and scalable water treatment solution. The project included reinforced concrete structures, masonry and plank siding for durability, upgraded end-suction pumps, and a biological contactor and filter system to optimize treatment efficiency.

Wendler’s scope of work encompassed all aspects of construction, including excavation, backfill, sitework, and the installation of critical mechanical and electrical components. Upgrades to the plant’s chemical feed systems, piping networks, and motor controls further enhanced operational reliability, giving the city more reliable water for years to come.

The large pressure filter tanks required precise scheduling to hoist the tanks into the building prior to the roof erection. Early engagement with suppliers and frequent check-ins were essential in keeping deliveries on schedule.
