When the Eastern Iowa Airport needed to expand its fuel storage capacity and modernize its fueling operations, it partnered with Wendler to build a comprehensive bulk fuel storage and dispensing solution.
The project included six 50,000-gallon Jet A fuel tanks, as well as diesel and aviation gasoline storage tanks (12,000-gallon and 6,000-gallon) designed to support ground equipment. The facility also incorporates a self-service fuel dispensing system and automated usage tracking technology to ensure regulatory compliance and operational safety.
Wendler’s scope included all associated electrical, mechanical, concrete, traffic control, fencing, and site work. The firm also handled the installation of storm sewers, water service, and sanitary sewer lines, and coordinated the installation and testing of the above-ground fuel tanks and fuel dispensing station.
One of the defining aspects of this project was the extensive safety coordination required in an active airport environment. This included strict security protocols such as background checks for all personnel, and rigorous fuel quality testing to meet aviation safety standards. Wendler also managed unexpected challenges, including securing specialized fuel testing firms and fuel cleaning services after initial samples did not meet quality requirements.
The completed fuel depot now provides the Eastern Iowa Airport with expanded capacity, automated tracking, and greater operational efficiency to support future aviation growth at Iowa’s second-largest airport.
