The City of Marion, Iowa, knew it needed a more reliable and efficient treatment system to meet the needs of its fast-growing community.

With elevated iron levels affecting water clarity and taste, city officials sought a solution to remove excess iron while ensuring the long-term sustainability of its water supply.

Wendler, in partnership with the Marion Water Department and Veenstra & Kimm, constructed a 2.1 million gallon per day (MGD) treatment facility, incorporating advanced filtration and pumping technology to enhance the system’s efficiency.

The project scope included excavation, reinforced concrete, structural masonry, roofing, mechanical systems, and electrical work, including conduit, cables, power wiring, motor controls and housings, starters, switches, fixtures, and controls.

A state-of-the-art pressure filtration system was installed to effectively remove iron, while upgrades to Booster Station 5 improved overall water distribution in the city. The new plant, capable of treating 1,500 gallons per minute, now provides Marion residents with cleaner, higher-quality water.

The pandemic created significant delays in sourcing electrical components, requiring us to rethink scheduling and resource allocation on this project. By working closely with suppliers, adjusting timelines as needed, and identifying alternative solutions, we were able to keep the project moving forward.
